Council Sits To-night The monthly meeting of the Waihi Borough Council will be held this evening. No “Telegraph” on Labour Day There will be no publication of the “Telegraph” next Monday, October 26 (Labour Day). Advertisers are asked to make arrangements accordingly. Not Forgotten Members of the Waihi Surf and Life-saving Club who are serving overseas will be remembered again this Christmas in a practical way. Useful parcels of good-cheer, with appropriate messages from the club, should reach them by Yuletide. Back Home Second N.Z.E.F. personnel - who recently returned to the Dominion include Gunner A. Morrison, son of Mr and Mrs W. Morrison, Waihi Beach; Sergeant J. E. Cooper, son of Mr H. J. Cooper, Katikati; and Private R. J. Dixon, son of Mrs K. Dixon, 'Katikati. “Art In Education” “At the Waihi District High Scha4 Parents’ Association meeting to held to-morrow (Thursday), evening, at 7.30 p.m. in the school, Miss H. Gale will speak on the subject of ' Art In Education.”. This side of modern education is very varied, and Miss Gale, who is Art Mistress at the High School, is well qualified to speak on this interesting subject. All parents and friends are invited to this meeting.

Exemption During Alerts Mine and battery employees attached to the Waihi and district E.P.S. who are at work when trial, emergency alarms are given may be exempted from answering the call, but this is at the discretion of the Mayor and Chief Warden, Mr W. M. Wallnutt who, in the event of deciding that the men may remain at work instead of reporting for duty, will communicate his decision to responsible mining officials. Exemption from alerts is not automatic, as would seem • from an item that appeared in this column on Monday.

Issue of Ration Books

The postmaster, Mr V. G. Grinlinton, advises that the Waihi post office is being opened for the issue of ration books between the hours of 7 and 9 p.m. each evening this week (Monday to Friday inclusive). Those persons living in the outlying districts may receive their ration books during the day, but townspeople are expected to make application during the hours mentioned above as, this being pension week, the depleted staff at the post office will be heavily taxed. Members of the public are therefore enjoined to co-operate with the postmaster and staff and obtain their books on the earliest evening possible.
