SURF LIFE-SAVING

WORK OF THE WAIHI CLUB WARTIME SET-BACKS DETERMINED TO CARRY ON Determination to carry out their usual duties this summer, despite the adverse effect of the war so far as personnel and other things : -were concerned, was expressed 'by members of the Waihi Surf and Life-saving Club at the eighth annual meeting, at which the president-, Mr F. Raddings, presided. All visitors to the Beach know of the good work of the club, and it is a credit to the organisation that, partly because of its system of patrols, not one life has been lost at the seaside for many years. Year Reviewed

“Our passwords, ‘Service, Vigilence and Endurance,’ have been ably upheld during the passing years,” states the report of the executive committee. “To-day we have such a great crisis before us that we can rest assured that the boys who left our shores' will go forward with our passwords in their hearts. During the year many of our members have been called upon to do military duty of different kinds, and as a result awards fell away to a minimum. . .

The ranks of our members are being gradually thinned out by the military authorities, but in spite of this a skeleton patrol was maintained on the Beach during holiday time. Many of our members are in strange lands, and our girls, too, are doing their bit when the call comes. The season that now faces us will, no doubt, foe a very trying one as many restrictions have been imposed upon the general public. With this in mind the activities of our club must not be lost sight of, and we hope to recruit young members and, if possible, to train them as in the past so that they, when their call for duty arises, may go forth and give the public the many services that our present members have given. The New Year Sports

“The annual New Year children’s sports gala was again held in spite of a reduced attendance. These sports were not run on such a lavish scale as before; but, in spite of this, the sports netted a small amount for our club. We desire at this juncture to thank all those who gave their services on that day, and so assiated the running of the sports. The pastyear, although a quiet one, has called upon the officers for their co-oper-ation; and once again we have brought our club through a difficult year financially sound. Special officers cannot foe enumerated as when called upon to work for the club all of them .invariably do a fine job. What Does Future Hold?

“What the future holds for us no one can forecast; but we are sure that however many of our members left home, we can foe assured of a surf club. Our lads overseas we salute; and we hope that the day may be not far distant when we will again enjoy their company with us. To everyone we extend the season’s greetings, and hope that this terrible conflict now raging will end in the near future.” The report was adopted. Election of Officers Officers were elected as follow: Patron, the Mayor, Mr W. M. Wallnutt; president, Mr F. Raddings; vice-president, Mr S. Bonnici; secretary, Mrs B. W.
