A GREAT NEED

LOCAL SANATORIUM TUBERCULOSIS CASES PROPOSAL TO THAMES BOARD A proposal to establish a ■ sanatorium in the Auckland Province for the reception of tuberculosis cases was the subject of a letter from the Waikato Hospital Board read at Tuesday’s meeting of the Thames Hospital Board. • The matter was discussed- at the last meeting of the Waikato board, when it was considered that there was a great need for such an institution, as it was not in the best interests of patients that they should have -to go to Otaki or Waipukurau for treatment owing to the cost of travelling charges to and from the sanatorium, and also to . the fact that on account of the distance from their home it was not possible for relations, to visit patients. The Thames board will inform the Waikato board that they are agreeable to attend any conference held to further the proposal. Pukeora Sanatorium A circular letter was received from the Waipawa Hospital Board pointing out that the building programme in connection with the .Pukeora Sanatorium is nearing completion, as a result of whiich most up-to-date facilities will be afforded for the treatment of patients. The new facilities include a 54-bed' block of wards in from single to; eight-bed units, a new X-ray block,, patients’ lounge, provided with billiard tables, reading rooms, library and internal radio broadcasting plant. A 70-bedroom Nurses’ Home has been . completed, with provision for a lecture room, as it is proposed to make Pukeora the aides’ training school.
