WAIHI’S PROGRESS

QUALITY DAIRY CATTLE BRED

SUCCESSES AT RECENT SALES The fame of the Waihi gold mine first drew the attention of people _to the district; but it was only the most ardent enthusiast who was persuaded to take up land hero and many an opportunity was lost by lack of foresight as to the possibilities of the district. Even among those who did turn to farming the most ardent advocate of the cause would have hesitated to say that the locality would one day be a centre for the breeding of quality pure-bred dairy cattle.

Evidence N _that this is an accomplished fact can be had by a study of the recent seasonal bull sales. The “Illawarra” stud farm, Waihi Plains, obtained top price for yearlings of the day at the combined breeders’ sale at Hamilton in September, and at the Thames Valley Breeders’ Club sale all the best places were filled by Waihi-bred cattle. “Tolgarth” stud, recently of Waihi Plains, won the two-year-old cup with “Illawarra” in the second place. In the yearling cup competition “Butterstocks” filled first and second and top price. A notable feature of this sale was the condition of all the Waihi stock being noticeably superior. Local farmers do not need to travel far to buy the best in the province.
