More Vegetables “It looks as if we will have more vegetables grown in New Zealand this season than ever, subject to the conditions being favourable,’’ said the Hon. J. G. Barclay, Minister of Agriculture, in New Plymouth recently. “Seedsmen reported the sale of more seeds this year than ever before.” Worse in Australia “We were three weeks in Australia in August and stayed in some of the best hotels and we never saw a potato at a meal during the whole time,” said the Hon. J. G. Barclay, Minister of Agriculture and Marketing, in New Plymouth. “When we arrived back in Auckland potatoes were served to us at the first meal we had,” he added. ■

Church Membership Falls “Much concern is being shown at Home by another fall in church membership reported at the May Synods,” stated the Methodist Times. “The decreases scheduled were; Full membership, 11,653; on trial, 916; juniors, 5444. Various causes are assigned for the decreases, but the fact remains that they are there, and give much occasion for searching of heart.”

Unity in The Church “What is to be said of a church which in these days can graduate and ordain on the Pacific coast a Chinese and a Japanese at one time and hear them from the same pulpit in one service?” states the Methodist Times. “Of six men named one was Chow Ye Ching and another Takashi Komiyama, B.A. It was a demonstration of that unity which is from above and a promise of things to come.”

Smoking and Morale One reason for the importance of maintaining the production of tobacco was that “in wartime, smoking kept up the morale of the people,” said the managing-director of a tobacco company, who was appealed for in Christchurch on the ground of public interest. Since the Battle of Britain, he added, the sale of tobacco in England had increased considerably. Mr J. S. Barnett '(chairman °yhe appeal board): “I would lifee a doctor’s ruling on that.” “The Kerb-side Bookmaker.” “I am not sure that the small book-maker doesn’t do more damage than the big bookmaker,” remarked Mr E. C. Levvey, S.M., in the Christchurch Magistrate’s Court when Mr E. S. Bowie, counsel for a man charged with 'bookmaking, pleaded that the accused was in “only a small way.” Unfortunately, said Mr Levvey, the court had more than enough experience of the aftermath of “kerb-side bookmaking,” which could be very pernicious in its effects.

Fourteen Tons of Greensetone Approximately 14 tons of greenstone stored in Kumara represents the accumulation of about 30 years’ spasmodic collecting by a Greymouth resident who lived for many years in Kumara, states the Christchurch Star-Sun. The greater- part of the stone has been collected by this man and his brother, but some of it has been bought in the hope of finding a remunerative market. Some of the blocks weigh up to lßcwt. One block, weighing more than three tons, was bought eight or ten years ago for £205. This block has since been “shot" into smaller pieces. The difficulty'in finding buyers at present is that the stone cannot now be cut in New Zealand and was cut only on a small scale when the. operation was carried out in the Dominion. The greater part of the cutting and polishing of the greenstone has been done in' Germany.

Roosevelt. If either should need the help of the other to retain full power it would be forthcoming to the degree that it would be deemed effective.
