PEEPS INTO THE PAST

PROPOSED HOAD TO WAIHI BEACH DISCUSSED BY COUNCIL OTHER INTERESTING JOTTINGS The- following nit cresting paragraphs have been taken from old files of the “Waini Daily Telegraph”:— Friday, June 23, 1905—At the

usual fortnightly meeting of the Waihi Borough Council there were present: His Worship the Mayor (Mr T. Gilmour), Ci's. R. McMillan, J. New til, J. E. Slcvin, I). Donaldson, J. Hume, G. Colebrook, J. Foster, H. A. McCartliny, J. A. Brown and J. Henderson.

The following discussion took place after the reading of the Finance Committee's report:— Cr. Slcvin, speaking on the question of the beach road, said lie thought that to shelve the question would be a breach of faith. The Mayor explained that the matter had been discussed and decided by the Legal and Finance Committee the night before. Cr. Foster said he had favoured a short road to the beach, but when it liad come to liis own and the council’s knowledge that the land had been taken up, it appeared to him it would be a waste of money to take the road through private property. The Mayor said that lie had mentioned the matter to the Hon. Mr McGowan, and the Minister thought that owing to the heavy expense (about £13,000) the matter should be held over. Cr. McMillan said it was an extra- I ordinary thing to agitate for the mak- I ir.g of the road through private property at a cost of £13,000 when they had urgent works pending, entailing large sums. Cr. Colebrook wanted to know , where all the private property was. Cr. Hume said that lie thought it < a funny think that while they were | asking the Government for a loan , they were proposing to spend a large , sum outside their own district. j i Cr. Donaldson said he was under |, the impression that the route was in I; abeyance and thought a Bill might <. he framed without indicating the L route. In the meantime the engineer j could report as to who were the own- r ers of the land on the possible routes, t Me moved to that effect. c Cr. Foster seconded. He had no c idea that the Bill was going to tie [ them to one route. a

The Mayor said that if they wanted the engineer to report on the matter he should he provided with one or two men who could furnish him with information.

The motion was agreed to, and the report was then adopted. Crs. Slcvin and Colebrook recorded their votes against the shelving of the question.

AMALGAMATION OF WAIHI WITH WAIKINO

Saturday, June 23, 1906.—At last night’s meeting of the AVaihi Borough Council Cr. Henderson proposed I that the Mayor (Mr Gilmour) lie askled to move in the direction of inviting Waikino to join the borough. He pointed out that the amalgamation of Waihi and Waikino would he an effective means of settling the road question. If a conference were held the nmttei could be settled on its merits. In the meantime the engineer could ascertain if Waikino was included in the prescribed area of the borough limits, and the Mayor could then call a special meeting of the council to consider the question. He would suggest that the engineer he so instructed. Cr. Foster seconded. He understood that many Waikino residents were favourable to amalgamation. It would he a very good thing for both places in many respects. In the matter of the hospital alone the amalgamation would he a great advantage. The motion was then put and carried unanimously.
