CONTINUATION OF GUP MATCHES H.5.0.8.’S DEFEAT ATHENREE , KATIKATI AND MATAURA DRAW Two senioi’ matches were played on Rugby Park on Saturday in perfect weather. The first game ended in a High School Old Boys’ victory over Athenree by 11 points to 5. The losers were unlucky in being' without the services of several of their usual players, but put up a good showing against superior opposition. The High School Old Boys were on the attack for a greater part of the time, but the Athenree backs, pai ticularly Ainsley, had a handy knack of extricating their team from trouble by accurate line-kicks. The second match, Mataura v. Katikati, was a much more keenly fought contest and ended in a draw, 6 points a il — a fair indication of the play. Katikati had the better set of at- * tacking backs, Mataura showing weaknesses in this department, but their forwards evened up for them. ATHENREE V. H. 5.0.8.

Athenree kicked off and attacked and from play in front of the posts Sydney dived over for a try which Tip converted —Athenree 5, H. 5.0.8. 0. Play went to the Athenree quarter, Furey, A. Woodland and Murdoch handling, the latter’s pass not being taken and the defenders forcing from tight forward play on the line. The home side held their position inside Athenree territory, several back attacks failing to break through and a long kick by Ainsley found touch in the opposite quarter. Cooper and Ainsley were both tackled in turn as they dived for the line, and a free kick to the High School for hanging-on Relieved. The High School forwards forced their way to the A+henree quarter and a long free kick by J. Woodland went over the bar —Athenree 5, H. 5.0.8. 3. Athenree 5. A Woodland sent the High School backs to the attack, Davis clearing from tight play on the ’ine with a good linekick. Ainsley got his side out of more trouble with another line-kick, but the Woodland brothers, Furey and Seath handled to take play buck to the scoring line, Athenree putting up a good defence, however, and a forward rush led by Hearn and Sydney breaking through to the opposite quarter. The High School backs opened out in another passing movement, but a dropped transfer spoiled and again Ainsley sent a ‘ long kick to the side-line, time con - ing with play in the Athenree quar- 1 ter. J Mr C. Burt was in charge. MATAURA V. KATIKATI ! Mataura set the ball rolling with" ‘ a rush to the Katikati quarter, but 1 Pamment relieved. Dartnell and j Coffey headed the return Mataura ' rush but L. Johnson blocked and 1 Hudson and I. Johnson kicked 1 through to the home quarter, a * scrum going down under the posts, * Stamp getting away with the ball and kicking. Wells and Haines headed a Mataura forward movement till blocked by the opposing full-back, 1 Grayling, and Pamment picked up 1 the ball and passed out to L. Johnson, 1 to Wills for the latter to score, the 1 kick failing—Katikati 3, Mataura 0. 1 McNamara saved for Mataura with a 1 line-kick and Shaw, Stamp and Laugman handled to go to the Katikati corner, the forwards battling hard, and the ball again going out to Shaw for him to score an unconverted try —Katikati 3, Mataura 3. With play j at mid-field, Pamment cut through nicely and -passed out to I. Job ison, to Hudson, to Dobbs to score a nice try as half-time sounded —Katikati C, Matuuf-J 3.

Mataura's forwards gained the nsccr.deiry early in the second spell, but I. Johnson relieved, Katikafi hooking from .a scrum and L. Johnson passing out for Pamment to run through, the attackers hooking from another scrum and L. Johnson being tackled with the ball on the scoring mark, Mataura kicking and Shaw following up till stopped by Grayling. Coffey marked in the face oE a Katilutti rush and Wells came away from the tight with the ball at his toe, Haines, Kingston!, Hughes and Dartnell backing him up, and a kick going across field in front of the posts, Stamp raced up to take the hail and score in the corner, the kick being unsuccessful —Katikati C, Mataura C. Both teams worked hard in tight play in neutral grouffd, the hall going out to L. Johnson, who sent it on, but Pamment was tackled. I Johnson initiated another Katikati attack, but. a knock-on spoiled, and Mooney got possession from a scrum and passed to Langman who kicked, Anderson and Kingsford following up fast to the scoring line but neither steadying the ball and a force resulting. Mataura again hooking, Mooney broke through with the ball till tackled by L. Johnson, tight play following in the Katikati quarter till Finlay led a- clearing rush. Wills sent a long kick back to touch in the Mataura quarter put Katikati in a good position, the ball being punted over the scoring mark but McNamara forcing. Hard play in neutral ground followed till the call of time.
