BUSY TIME FOR PLUMBERS

HEAVY FROSTS DISORGANISE WATER SUPPLIES

ELECTRIC HEATERS AFFECTED

Heavy frosts in Waihi on Saturday and yesterday played havoc with domestic water-pipes and hot-water systems in the borough, and both local plumbing firms, Mr R. S. Kalhi and W. A. Parry and Co., have been busily oil gaged over the week-end, and are still working at full pressure, to set things right. According to the official local recorder, Mr M. F. llaszard, 11 degrees of frost were registered on Saturday morning and 10 d grees yesterday morning. One degree was recorded this morning. On both Saturday and Sunday, however, the fr< st on the lower-lying parts of the town must have been considerably heavier than was recorded on Mr Haszarrl’s property. Several milking machines, it is reported, were also affected by the trust, and a number of customers had to wait for tlieir milk. The reason why hot-water systems were so largely affected, it is stated, was because Dio power is automatically switched off between 0 a.in. and 0 a.m.; and after Dio power lias been switched off (he water in the steam vent freezes and a block of ice forms, causing the plant to get out of order. This danger can he obviated if the consumer switches off-the heater at, say, 6 a.m. or 7 a.m., and turns it on again when Die power has been restored, or a little more. Before turning it on, however, consumers should make sure that the water is running freely from the hot-water tap.
