ST. JOHN AMBULANCE

THE ANNUAL COMPETITIONS

LARGE ENTRIES AVAIL!I RETAINS BUTLER SHIELD The largest gathering of St. John Ambulance brigadesmen seen in this district took place on Saturday in connection with the annual competitions, which, owing to the very adverse weather conditions, were held in the King’s Hall instead of on the Recreation Reserve. Wailii was successful in retaining the Butler Shield after a very close finish with Tauranga. There were no less than 2S entries for the single-man efficiency* test, competitors coming from Tauranga, Thames, Te Aroha and Paeroa. The results are as follows:—

Single-man Efficiency Test: Captaiilk S. N. Smith (Tauranga), 1; T. Fry and D. Adamson (last year’s winner), runners-up. The winner holds the Birse Cup for one year. He also receives a miniature cup. Butler Shield: Four-man event — AVaihi, SSL points, 1; Tauranga, SS, 2. The other competitors were very

close up. Mr K. Hawthorn was presented with the Fry Cup for the highest points in the first-year examinations.

Mr McDonald (Frankton Junction) was the judge of the stretcher work, Doctors L. R. Hetherington and F. G. Barrowclough taking the first aid portion of the competitions.

When presenting the trophies, Mr McDonald pointed out mistakes which had been made by various competitors, and also gave advice which was much appreciated by members. At the conclusion of the competitions, the visitors were entertained to afternoon tea by members of the local brigade, including the Misses Freda Birse and Maire Jarvis. Prior to the commencement of the competitions, the assembled brigadesmen were addressed by Superintendent Birse.

Six members of the Frankto:

Junction team were runners-up in the big metropolitan contest held early this year.
