CORONATION WEEK

PROPOSED ENTERTAINMENT OF CHILDREN

OPEN-AIR GATHERING A meeting of the Children's Coronation Committee, presided over by Mr H. W. Hopkins, was held in the Borough Council Chambers on Saturday evening. On the motion of Mrs Carlyon, seconded by Mrs Wallnutt, it was decided to rescind the resolution in respect of indoor functions adopted at the first meeting and that an open-air function be arranged. The lion, secretary, Mrs Carlyon, reported that there were 621 children on the roll up to Standard 4. Mrs Allwood, at the request of the chairman, gave an outline of similar children's functions held yearly in Manchester, England. To make the local function a success she urged the necessity of inculcating a spirit of enthusiasm not only within the organisation itself but amongst the community generally. Mesdames Wilson, Sommerville and the Rev. A. Marshall were appointed a committee to wait on the school teachers wtih a view to enlisting their help in organising a programme, the committee to have power to add to its number.. The fear was expressed that the entertainment might have to be cancelled on account of the weather. Mr Marshall said he was afraid, after the publicity that had been given in the press and in the community, If they were to drop the function, the promoters would be accused of suffering from cold feet, and he thought they should go ahead and chance the weather. The motion was carried and Mr Marshall gave a detailed outline of the day's programme which included if available, the distribution of newly-minted pennies to each child as a souvenir. Mr Marshall went on to say that there would be a procession of the older pupils to be headed by the Waihi Federal and Salvation Army Bands. Committees would be appointed to look after each group of children, and that on their arrival at the Recreation Ground the refreshment committee would have everything in readiness to supply refreshments. It would be. fatal if any delay occurred in serving the children after their arrival. They should not be kept waiting, as even a delay of five or ten minutes would be most undesirable. Football competitions for the boys would be organised, and basketball games for the girls. Prizes would have to be obtained for these competitions. The following refrestment committee was appointed: Mesdames Wallnutt, Sommerville, Allwood, Mannix and Boggs.

' Collections made ■by Mesdames Allwood and Wallnutt amounting to £7 6s 2d were handed to the treasurer, Mr J. M. Wrigley, by the secretary.
