CARNIVAL WEEK

MEETING OF BUSINESS MEN’S COMMITTEE PROGRAMME WELL ADVANCED A meeting of the Business Men’s Committee of the Farmers’ Union carnival week was held in the Borough Chambers at 9.30 a.m. on Wednesday morning. Details of the spotting competitions and free gifts schemes were fully discussed and certain members appointed to subcommittees to secure the list of free gifts to be offered. In referring to the value of the carnival from the town’s point of view, the chairman, Mr J. White head, pointed out the necessity of the enthusiastic co-operation of all the businesses in Waihi. His experience had been that the return from shopping weeks was directly proportionate to the effort put into' it. He expressed the opinion that the whole of the townspeople would rally strongly to the proposal and that a really good week for all would result. The free gift scheme makes a wonderful appeal to the public. The manner in which it operates is as follows: A newspaper detailing the activities of the carnival will be circulated free to all householders within the district. Each newspaper will bear a number. The paper must be carefully preserved as without it no free gift can be collected. The free gifts, when and where they are available, will be advertised in the paper and each gift will be allotted a number. The fortunate person bearing the paper with the number corresponding to that of the gift will be entitled on the production of the paper and a docket bearing date from May 10 to May 15 for at least a shilling for goods purchased from any store supporting the Farmers’ Union carnival week, to claim the gift. Jumbled business firms’ names is another competition for which good prizes will be offered by the Farmers’ Union, the only condition of entry being the enclosing of a docket from one of the stores supporting the carnival. Two spotting competitions will be arranged on similar conditions. A number of shops will be listed as having an article foreign to the business displayed in the window and the task of entrants is to discover the greatest number of these articles. It sounds exceedingly simple. The first spotting competition will close on Wednesday night when the articles in the windows will be changed and the second competition will close on Friday night Solutions in the first competitior must be in the carnival office noi . later than 10 a.m. on Thursday anc in the second competition at 10 a.m on Saturday. ’ The enthusiastic way in which tin * proposals were received ensures tha | Waihi will maintain its reputatioi * for doing things in a businesslike manner.
