WAIHI BAPTISTS

WELCOME TO NEW MINISTER, REV. E. E. SMITH SOCIAL FUNCTION HELD On Tuesday evening the Waihi Baptists tendered a public welcome to their new minister, Rev. E. E. Smith, recently of the Royal Oak Baptist Church, Auckland. The inclement weather affected the attendance somewhat and prevented a number of Baptists from Tauranga being present. The meeting began with a short devotional session, after which the chairman, Mr S. H. Brown, read letters and telegrams of greeting and cheer from the Reverends M. W. P. Lascelles (secretary of the Baptist Union), C. Chant (president of the Auckland Auxiliary Baptist Union), J. Hiddlestone (secretary of the Auckland Auxiliary), Stowards (of Thames) and J. Carlisle (of Tauranga). The chairman also welcomed a contingent of Baptists from Morrinsville who had motored over to attend the meeting and bring greetings from the church there.

During the evening short addresses of welcome were given by the Rev. R. Day (Methodist) and Major McKenzie (Salvation Army) on behalf of the Ministers' Association and the local churches; by the Rev. W. Flett, of Morrinsville, on behalf of the South Auckland Baptist Association. Mr Campbell, of Waikino, also spoke a few earnest words of welcome. An apology was received from the Rev. A. Marshall (Presbyterian), who was prevented from being present through illness. The Rev. B. E. Smith suitably responded. The speeches were interspersed with vocal items, including a duet by Misses. Fox and Kennerley, and solos by Mesdames Gracie and J. W. Jones and the Rev. Day, the accompanists being Mrs S. H. Brown and Miss D. Saunders. Little Miss Ruth Jamieson presented Mrs Smith with a beautiful bouquet and the meeting concluded with supper provided by the ladies of the church.
