BEAUTIFYING WORK

WAIH! SOCIETY'S ACTIVITIES ARBOR DAY PLANTING SHELTER TREES AT BEACH A meeting of the committee of the Waihi Beautifying and Tree Conservation Society was held at the Borough Council Chambers on Saturday evening there being present Messrs W. J. Thompson (in the chair), H. W. Hopkins, A. Leach, J. M. Wrigley (hon. secretary) and Canon J, L. A. Kay 11.

The question of taking an active part in tree-planting on Arbor Day was raised by Canon Kayll and in the course of the ensuing discussion Mr Hopkins agreed that the question of participating came within the province of the society. Other members having concurred with these views it was decided, on the motion of Canon Kayll, seconded by the chairman, that a sub-committee, comprising Messrs Hopkins, Thompson and the mover, should co-operate with the principal of the Waihi High School, Mr F. R. Slevin, and the Works Committee of the Waihi Borough Council for the purpose of promoting the observance of Arbor Day and treeplanting within the borough of Waihi.

APPEAL TO CHILDREN Speaking further on the subject, Canon Kayll said he thought the society should endeavour to promote an interest in tree-planting amongst the children and expressed the hope that members would give this matter their earnest consideration. The inculcation of the spirit of tree-plant-ing in the minds of young people was very desirable in the future life of this country.] The question of planting suitable trees in Secklon Avenue to take the place of the pinus insignis as the latter grew old and dangerous might well claim attention and in this connection he could think of no more graceful trees than the Norfolk pines. Young Norfolk pines could, no doubt, be obtained and they could be planted now and be made to gradually replace the pinus insignis as the latter passed their period of usefulness. Mr Hopkins advocated the planting of patches of shelter trees along the Waihi Beach frontage.

A suggestion was also made that the vacant triangle at the corner of Seddon Avenue and Kenny Street would make a good nursery for young trees. CURRENT YEAR'S WORK On the motion of Mr Hopkins, seconded by Mr Leach, it was decided that a statement of receipts and expenditure up to the end of its financial year be submitted to the Borough Council with a request that a subsidy to the society of £2O be provided in the council's estimates for beautifying work for the year ending March 31st, 1937. Offers were received from district farmers to supply farmyard manure and Mr Hopkins moved that he be authorised to spend up to £2 for the cartage of these fertilisers to the required points.

This was seconded by Mr Leach and carried.
