THAMES RETURNS

MR. THORN WINS COMFORTABLY MAJORITY OF 1259 VOTES There was a further swing to Labour in the Thames electorate, Mr J. Thorn, the party’s candidate, defeating Mr A. M. Samuel (Independent) by 1225 votes, the respective totals being 5689 and 4433, the Democrat candidate only finding 216 supporters. At the 1931 deletion, when there was a straightout contest beween Mr Samuel, then a member of the Coalition Government, and Mr J. S. Montgomerie, who represented the Labour Party, the sitting member had a majority of 464 votes, his tally being 4702 against the 4238 cast in favour of his opponent. Yesterday’s returns were expeditiously issued by the returning officer for the electorate (Mr H. R. Bush) and his deputy at Waihi (Mr I. T. Fallwell), who are to be commended on their promptitude.
