WAIHI WARNED OF APPROAGH- • ING MOSQUITO SEASON ‘
COUNCIL TAKES ACTION
A letter from the district officer for health, Dr. T. J. Hughes, drew the attention of the Waihi Borough Council at its monthly meeting to the. fact that the mosquito season was approaching and that it was desirable that every possible effort should be made to prevent a nuisance and thus avoid the danger of the transmission of disease. To this end Dr. Hughes pointed out that as mosquitos bred in stagnant water, such as ponds and pools, in bottles and in collections of water in tins, etc., oil should be spread in the quarters likely to be affected. Kerosene was the' handiest and most effective means of coping with the menace and should he spread where required at fairly frequent intervals. He asked the council to instruct its officers to give special attention to the matter and to take proceedings, if necessary, against any' persons failing to abate the nuisance on premises where the breeding or harbouring of mosquitos was likely. The Mayor, Mr W. M. Wallnutt, in moving that the letter received, said that the local inspector would be instructed to attend to the matter.
