N.Z. TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS
TOURNAMENT CONCLUDED ON MONDAY MALFROY WINS SINGLES By Telegraph—Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, this day. The New Zealand lawn tennis championships were concluded yesterday morning in the best weather experienced during the tournament. The outstanding event was undoubtedly the final of the men’s singles championship in which the brilliant volleying and daring attacking methods of Malfroy triumphed over the steadiness and artistic stroke equipment of the Australian, Sproule. Results were as follows;
Men’s Singles Semi-finals: Sproule (N.S.W.) beat Andrews (England) 12—10, 6—2, 6 —4; Malfroy (Wellington) beat Donohoe (N.S.W.), 6—3, S—G, 5 —7, 9 —7. Final: Malfroy beat Sproule, 4—6, S—-6, 6 —3, 6—B, 6—3. Men’s Doubles —Final; Sproule and Donohoe beat Seay and Malfroy, C —l, 6 —o, 3—6, 6—o. Women’s Singles—Final: Miss Bickerton (N.S.W.) beat Miss Velkenburg (N.S.W.), 6—3, I—6, 6—3.
Women’s Doubles —Final: Misses Bickerton and Hall beat Mrs Melody and Miss Nicholls, 6 —3, 6 —3.
