BETTER ROADS

GOOD NEWS FOR DISTRICT SETTLERS WORKS IN WAIHI RIDING EARLY START TO BE MADE Miles of “side” roads in the Waihi riding will he metalled in the near future, according to information given at the monthly meeting of the Ohinemuri County Council at Paeroa on Thursday afternoon. This is the result of the recent visit to Wellington of the chairman of the council, Mr W. Marshall, and the engineer, Mr L, E. Shaw; the full support of Mr A. M. Samuel, M.P. for Thames, and the unceasing efforts of the riding member, Mr G. Hoye. MINISTER’S DECISION Letters from the Minister of Public Works, the Hon. J. Bitchener, which were forwarded by Mr Samuel, gave first indications that this satisfactory state of affairs would be brought about. In regard to the application by the council for a grant of £2OO for the metalling of the road loading to the Waimata railway station, the Minister said the matter had been considered as part of a wider j scheme, and it had been decided to employ married relief workers to metal this road and the Old Tauranga road. The district engineer of the Public Works Department would control the matter, and further information could be obtained from him. Any assistance which the council could give, either by monetary contribution or the use of plant, accommodation, etc., would be appreciated. The commencement of the work depended upon a contribution from the Unemployment Board and on receipt of a favourable reply to the application which had been made, authority to proceed would be issued. It was also stated that a free grant of £2OO for the metalling of the Ngatangata and Paterson’s roads had been made by the Minister, following the representations made by the county chairman. DELEGATES’ GOOD WORK

The chairman said that while the engineer and he were in Wellington they had drawn attention to the matter as forcibly as they could; and they had to thank Mr Samuel for his vigorous assistance. A vote of thanks to the member for his services was owing.

A vote of thanks to Mr Samuel was carried unanimously. Mr Marshall said it was also hoped that Trig road and between there and the Beach road would be included in the scheme, and he hoped even to get some of the local men on the work at 10s a day with the Public Works Department. Nevertheless, the position was exceedingly gratifying. In regard to Paterson’s road and Ngatatanga road, the council was now almost in a position to put the matter definitely before settlers. The cost would be about £6OO more than the amount allowed by the Unemployment Board for relief labour —£200 each from the Public Works Department, the council and the settlers — and he moved that authority to do the work be given, if satisfactory arrangements could be made between all those parties concerned. “We are certainly getting over the problem of metalling th eroads of the Waihi riding,” added the chairman. “We should be able almost immediately to get on with the work.” AUTHORITY TO PROCEED “It is a very satisfactory position,” said the Waihi riding member. On the motion of the deputy-chair-man, Mr Colin Mason, who was seconded by Cr. Hoye, a vote of thanks to Messrs Samuel and Marshall was carried unanimously. Mr Marshall at this stage received a telegram which, he said, announced that authority had been given for the metalling of the Waimata road, the cross road to the railway station, Old Tauranga road to the end of the metal and on to the main highway, and Trig road, from the Waimata Hall to the Beach road —a total distance of 347 chains. Further congratulations were given to those responsible when this satisfying state of affairs was announced,
