EMPLOYMENT OF WAIHI YOUTHS
UNDER-AGE APPLICANTS FOR WORK
THE MINIMUM REDUCED
In a report to the Borough Council on Wednesday evening the engineer, Mr M, F. Haszard, stated that in response to an advertisement he had received applications from 25 boys for work and on investigation had found that a number of them were under the specified age (17). These had so far not been employed, and lie would like an expression of opinion from the council as to how they were to be treated. To those eligible work bad been found on Seddon Avenue and the Kenny Street reserve. The whole of this area had been cut, and in a few weeks would be ready for burning.
Cr. H. W. Hopkins expressed the opinion that no alteration in tho specified age should be made and moved to that effect, Cr. J. Mitcheß seconding. Cr. C. F. Butcher said be thought if a boy under 17 years of age was willing to work and capable the council should employ him. Cr. J. J. Callaghan was of opinion that discrimination might be used in, the matter of employing these lads and that the age question might bo made a little more elastic. Ho was strongly in favour of making the ago IGi years and would move to that effect. This was seconded by Cr. Mitchell and carried.
