It is reported from Cromwell that Mr William Bell has disposed of his Four X. claim on the flat for £15,000. This claim is situated on the banks of the Kawarau above a claim held by Ounce, Limited. A further report states that an area of about 200 acres on tbe Kawarau, held by Mr William Murray, one of the vendors of the Bell-Kilgour Company's claim, is under offer to a promoting company for £IO,OOO. “The Americans live in hothouses,” said Dr. F. V. Bevan-Brown in an address to the Canterbury School Committees’ Association, mentioning central heating, which, he said, was not English. He disapproved of it, and described it as a very unhealthy and bad system. On the other hand it was economical and comfortable, and people always chose what was comfortable against what was healthy. Germany, particularly the Rhine Valley, was a most interesting country, said Dr. W. H. Simpson, of Wellington, when addressing the Rotary Club on his tour abroad. He had been impressed by the spirit of work that seemed to animate everybody, especially those in the fields. Never once did he see a workman in the fields stop and watch a train going by. They were there to work, ami they were not to be distracted by anything else. Germany appealed to him as a nation of workers.

A retired Wellington business man not long ago returned to the windy city after a world tour and was referring in the smoke-room of his hotel recently to some of his experiences. He said that during his travels ho had made it his business as an old smoker to sample as many brands of tobacco as he could, “and I suppose I shall be within the mark,” he added, “when I say that I have tried out fifty or sixty different kinds while en route. Not one of them, was equal in my opinion, to the New Zealand toasted tobacco. For flavour and fragrance, and above all for its comparative freedom from nicotine —due, as they tell me, to it being toasted this tobacco stands alone. It is unique. Many a pipeful did I give away during my trip, and everybody liked it.” The toasting process referred to by this gentleman—an elaborate one enough—renders the tobacco so treated perfectly harmless. As most smokers know there are four brands: Navy Cut No. 3 (Bulldog), Cavendish, Riverhead Gold, and Cup Plug No. 10 (Bullshead). *
