T.V. JERSEY BREEDERS' CLUB

ANNUAL MEETING AND ELECTION OF OFFICERS

YEAR OF GOOD PROGRESS

JThe eleventh annual meeting of the Thames Valley Jersey Breeders’ Club, of which several Waihi district farmers are members, was held at Paeroa, Mr E, Jamieson (president) presiding over a good attendance. The report, submitted by the chairman, stated that the club had justified its existence for another season, and in view of the difficult times could claim to have made substantial progress. It was hoped that members would continue their support during the incoming year and endeavour to win more enthusiasts for the Jersey breed. The membership had now reached 32, an increase of 15 since 1929, but there were still a number of breeders who had not linked up and it was trusted that they would join and co-operate in the club’s activities. The financial position was satisfactory, there being in hand at the close of the year a credit balance of £8 3s 3d, The club had held its annual fair in October last when the prices realised were quite in accordance with those ruling elsewhere and satisfactory to the vendors. The entries had totalled 45, but some studs had not been represented and it was hoped that these would enter some of their best animals at future fairs, so that the sales might build up a reputation throughout the district. In field day activities the club had had a successful season, there having been good attendances at the three studs visited —those ’of Messrs M. Crimmips 'and Sons (“Leafield”), Geo, Buchanan (“Kelvin”) and Mrs R. Irvine (“Illawara”). These functions had been of great value to the club in that they brought the members together and enabled them to know each other and their stock. During the ensuing year it was intended to extend activities to the ! studs of some of the more distant members who had given loyal support in the past. In concluding, Mr Jamieson said that judging from recent sales good Jersey cattle,, well done, would continue, to be a profitable line in farming aqd it behoved the breeders in the district to breed good • cattle, test them and cull fearlessly those not attaining standard requirements. Dairy farmers generally looked to the breeders to supply them with herd sires that would be real herd improvers and a ready market would always await quality cattle with butterfat backing

The report having been adopted, various matters pertaining to the welfare of the club were discussed and it was decided to inaugurate a competition among breeder's for" the highest testing two-year-old heifer each season. The club will donate

a handsome cup for the competition and a miniature cup will be given to each year’s winner. Officers were elected as follows: President, Mr H. H. Sutton (Waihi Pl£iih§) ; vice-presidents, Messrs M. Crintinihs '■(Whitelnp), Jj. !Kzgrd (Kopu) and W. Johnstone (Paetpa); auditor, Mr J, H. Bartlett; secretary and treasurer, Mr Ghas, Tpwnshend.
