To-day’s anniversaries— Albert, King of the Belgians, born, 1875. Anniversaries to-morrow— Capture of Vimy Hidge, 1917. People in Britain sent 65,000,000 more letters and 3,800,000 more parcels by post last year than in 1931. Candidates for ordination in England as clergymen in the Church of England last year numbered 585; this is the highest figure since 1914. Most of the lions in the London Zoo are valued at £4O each, while elephants appear on the annual stocktaking sheet at £6OO apiece. The rhinoceros, at £IOOO, is one of the Zoo’s “treasures.” The first cast-iron bridge ever made —it was cast in 1779—is still in use in the Severn Valley. By special mention in the old notice, everybody, including “officers and soldiers, whether on duty or not, and the Royal Family,” must pay toll to cross the ancient structure.
