EDUCATION IN WAIHI

SCHOOLS COMMITTEE RESIGNATIONS

FRESH ELECTION LIKELY

APATHY OP HOUSEHOLDERS Although tne five persons nominated for seats on the Waihi Schools Committee prior to the recent annual meeting of householders formed the necessary quorum and could have functioned, four of their number have since tendered their resignations, which presumably means that the Auckland Education Board will call the householders together again, probably on May 23rd, to eUct a committee for the current twelve months.

Had those nominated and automatically declare cl the new committee decided •,,i carry on it would l-.ive been witluu their province to recommend the r limes of ot ic s eligible to fill the remaining seats —four iu number —to the Education Board for approval, but it is understood that the majority opposed the adoption of this course, protoning to leave it to the householders to meet again and select a committee. DUTY OF HOUSEHOLDERS There was unusual apathy and a poor attendance at the recent annual meeting, due, no doubt, in a measure to the disinclination of householders to offer their services, with the consequent absence of a contest, bat it is to be hoped in the* best interests of education in Waihi That there will ho a larger attendance and increased nominations if another meeting is called. For many years past all efforts launched for the betterment of the young people of the town, both educationally and physically, have been generously supported by the community, and as a result the .Auckland board has most sympathetically viewed requests from the Schools Committees for monetary support in various directions. If, however, parents and others are going -o become apathetic it can hardly he expected that the board will continue to treat future applications for help with the same measure of generosity as in the past and the enviable reputation enjoyed for so long by Waihi in matters educational will suffer.
