HIGH SCHOOLS COMPETITION

THAMES VALLEY MATCHES

COMMENCED

WAIHI DEFEAT TE AROHA

Teh first round of the Thames Valley combined high schools’ football competition began on Saturday, when the first fifteen of the Waihi District High School met the representatives of the Te Aroha school at Pacroa, the match, which was exceedingly well contested throughout, being won by Waihi with 6 points to 3.

In the first half the only score came when Fallon, the Waihi first five-eighths, cleverly working the “blind side,” surprised the opposition and dashed over the line to score a neat try. White failing to improve— Waihi 3, Te Aroha 0. At the beginning of the second half Waihi scored again, this time from a forward rush, White capping the movement by diving over the line in a handy position. Thomson’s kick, however, failed Waihi G, Te Aroha 0. Te Aroha then rallied strongly, and initiated several dangerous attacking movements,, which carried them well into Waihi’s twenty-five. A penally kick to Te Aroha was succestsul — Waihi 6, Te Aroha 3. Waihi seemed to tire badly, while Te Aroha kept up the pressure in a desperate effort to equalise the score, and just before the call of time were unfortunate in losing two tries when their wing three-quarter, through overeagerness, knocked on at the critical moment.

For Waihi Sylvia and White were outstanding in the forwards, while Fallon, who played with groat judgment and determination, was easily the pick of the backs.
