DETRACTORS OF THE WAIHI BEACH

Sir, —Do you know of any place on earth except Waihi where citizens decry their own town. Its worst enemies are within its own boundaries. In Tuesday's issue of the “Telegraph” “Ratepayer” hadn’t one good word for the Waihi Beach; naming it the White Elephant, etc. Is it? The beach will forge ahead In spite of those who decry it. It is only two years since it has had an all-metal road to it. Next year it will Have electricity. What is badly needed is a bowling green. You must cater for the men between 50 and 60 who are the heads of grown-up families. At present they have their morning dip; the rest of the day hangs heavily on their hands and the consequence is that after a week or so they are full up and don’t come again. If they had a green they would enjoy themselves and come again, bringing their families with them. A green of four rinks would be sufficient for a beginning. “Ratepayer” mentions The Mount, Tauranga. Now as a beach that at Waihi compares more than favourably with it. It has a background of grassy slopes and native bush that the Mount can never have. As for access, after leaving the train at Tauranga one has to cross the harbour by ferry which takes as long as the car takes to go to the Waihi Beach. No, “Ratepayer” can brighten up and smile for the Waihi Beach is destined to be the seaside resort for the whole of the Waikato and Upper Thames and no one can prevent it. —I am,' etc,, X ISI ° N -
