IMPROVEMENTS AT THE WAIHI BEACH

Sir. —I noticed in your article re the Waihi Beach that the Borough Council turned down the request to spend money on improvements, and quite right too. The beach has always been a white elephant and will be until freehold sections are sold. Re the failure of the Railway Department to favour the resort for excursions, they no doubt find that the public know their own minds and. prefer Tauranga. And why? Because if they leave the train here they may or may not get a seat in a car, or they may have to wait for half an hour. Then there is the tedious and uncomfortable car ridb, and coming back there is the waiting by the car for the last of the passengers to turn up, a most unpleasant experience. Also if it is a wet day they have to shift for . themselves. Now at Tauranga they arrive in the comfort of the railway carriage, ond on arrival they have a choice of two beaches. If wet they have the town beach with shelters and a town there with every convenience that could possibly be required. So don’t blame the railway authorities. Re bowling greens and tennis courts, etc. In Auckland the people make their own; they don’t expect the ratepayers to pay for their amusement. They have too great a sporting instinct for that. Why not the Waihi Golf Club ask the Borough Council to supply them with a new golf course. Can you see them doing it? Not likely. Blessed is he that expecteth little for he shall not be disappointed. —I am, etc., RATEPAYER.
