PROHIBITION

ADDRESS BY THE REV. F. E, HARRY

" Why I Fight the Liquor Traffic,” was the subject dealt with by the Rev, I F. E. Harry in a powerful and witty speech delivered to a good audience in the Miners’ Union Hall on Wednesday evening last. The speaker vigorously attacked the liquor trade on enonomic, social, political and moral grounds. The statement made by the trade that if prohibition was carried 24,000 persons would be thrown out of employment he characterised as a deliberate falsehood. Less than 2000 poisons were employed in the manufacture and sale of liquor in New Zealand. “ How many,” he asked, “ are thrown out of work through drink?’ If the eight million pounds spent on drink were spent in other ways a wave of prosperity would sweep over the land. The Rev. J. McFarlane was chairman, and a hoarty vote of thanks was given at the close.
