THE FOOTBALL SEASON

THE AVAIHITAURANGA LEAGUE MATCH.

WIN FOR THE HOME TEAM

The second match, under the auspices of tin AVaihi Rugby League, wan played on the Recreation Ground on Saturday afternoon, when the Tania nga League representatives met

Waihii. There was a large attendance,

and the keen interest of the spectators was demonstrated by the frequency of

the applause which followed displays given by players on cither side. The result of the game was not generally expected, as it wag recognised that the local men would be meeting players more experienced in League football. Waihi's win by 19 to 6 was therefore received with greater satisfaction than would otherwise have boon the case.

The game iwas a trial of strength between the forward division, with occasional dashes of back play, which for the most part emanated from the visitors’ backs. Had the play been transferred to the "Waihi back line it is more than likely a different story would hav e been told as far as scoring wa s con-’ corned. Tauranga's scores wore ob- ( taiued by tries secured by I/. Green and Alley, neither of which was converted. Tauranga’s first score was the result of the brothers lies and Green judiciously working tho scrum on the blindside, the movement terminating in Alley crossing Wailui’s line, prohab.y the best Lrv of the day. .For AA adn J. Clark secured two tries, and Verrall. J. Dickey and Johns one each. Clark converted two of the tries, thus making a total score oi lb points. Tho AVadii Federal Band in attendance, and during tho afternoon played several selections. Mr A, H. Crane (of Tauranga) gave every satisfaction in his etpaeity of referee. Tentative arrangements have been made for Waihi to visit Tanranga next Saturday to play a return match.
