At tho sitting of tho Arbitration Court on the wage reduction question Mr Mack, secretary of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants, continued the employees’ case a gains' tho reduction of the workers' bonus, saying that the railwaymen, who did not all pay such high rent as other workers, and who received part of their clothing, were not able to keep pace with the . cost ot living on their present wages without working overtime.
Mr Evans (Otago) contended) that no reduction should come before the Commission defined a reasonable standard of living. add worker B bonus
Mr Pariane, secretary of the Drivers’ Union, referring to the Australian standard of articles required for a family of five in arriving at the basic figure said that a similar list adapted to Wellington prices would cost £5 Is weekly, to which rent must be added. Mr Groskery gave evidence regarding increased clothing costs. Drapery had risen by from 60 to 150 per cent. Mr McCombs. M.P., traversed the evidence in his reply, and tho hearing ig expected to conclude to-djny.
