Speaking with considerable emotion, she said: “Whom tho streets of London were flooded with placards bearing the words, ‘Lady Astor’s Divorce,’ many behoved that a divorce was impending between myself and Dovd Astor. Really, the events were 17 years old. The divorce in 1803 was entirely due to my husband's misconduct becoming so open that no alternative was left but to dissolve the marriage. Previously I preferred separation, having the custody of my child. Tliis is the whole history of my early sorrow. There a,re certain influences, which often lead to corruption in politics, trying to undermine my petition.” A resolution expressing confidence in Ladv Astor was passed with cheers.
