METHODIST CHURCH CONCERT

A large and appreciative audience attended the concert in the Miners’ Hull lust night, most of the items being encored. Mrs S. Brown opened the first part of the programme with a nicelyplayed pianoforte solo.. Miss Lilian Painton was happy in her selection', of ‘•The Swallows,” the song suiting her voice admirably. She was heartiiy encored. The duct “Venetian Song’ was splendidly interpreted by Misses Winnie Laybourn and Eva Clover, and Mr Dalton gave a capital rendering a? “Down in the Deep.’’ In response he gave ■'Boclied in the Cradle ot the Deep-’ with fine effect. Miss Laybourn captivated her amljence with “Old Fashioned , Town,’.’ and she was quite as successful with the encore number “Love’s Garden of Roses.’’ Mrs Keven increased her popularity by her excellent singing of “The Call of the Maytime.” "The llosary,” as an encore piece, was also sung delightfully. Miss Stokes played a violin solo beautifully, for so young a girl; the audience emphatically demanding more. Messrs Morgan and G. Armour were also encored for the’.r spirited rendition of “Army and Navy.” During the interval the “Gift Tree, 5 ’ bearing little golden bags containing donations towards reducing the debt on the church, was stripped. Numerous amounts were read out, ranging from 2s 2-{d up to five pounds, the total amounting to £27 14s 2Jcl. Rev. J. Olplicrt announced that, with Sunday’s collections,.and the proceeds of the concert, the amount raised would lie close or. £4O. The second part of the programme was equally as good as the first. In addition to those already mentioned, who again contributed items, Miss Winn'o Hawkins p'ayed a pianoforte solo with line expression’. Mrs Aitken won hearty applause for her song “Because.” Mr Henry’s cornet solo was a welcome item, and Mr Evan Moreau had to submit to a double encore. Miss Clover’s recitals, given with dramatic ability, lent variety and interest to the entertainment. The singling of the National Anthem brought a most successful concert to a close.
