THE NEW ZEALANDERS
LONDON POLICE TRIBUTE. A New Zealand officer write!) from England:—You may be interested to know that New Zealaiid soldiers arc well known to the Metropolitan police. In a recent report Superintendent R. A. D. Hunter, in command' of one of the Metropolitan police areas, said:“Allowing Tor very natural mental and physical re-acton among sod'effe who have endured extraordinary strain, personally T have np fault to find with the public conduct of eithpr Australian or New Zealand troops on leave. I am given to understand the standard pjf morality set in New Zealand is most rigid, and that almost religious ohsorvance is enjoined on I the troops of that country. I cannot, of course, pretend that those so’diers are immaculate, some small differences ’having occurred between them and thq military and civil policp ip |Le vicinity qT Leicester Square. Berth the Australian and New Zealand soldiers show a high average of education, and a very small pi ©portion arc absolutely iiilcerate. Their intelligence is therefore an aid to the Metropolitan force should they for any reason com© in contact with any of its mtembers. In the single case of violent assault committed by a soldier of one of the Australasian units it was found that the soldier was a man. from a foreign country who had been permitted to join H.M.’s .colonial forces.”
