Auckland, this day Mr, Kettik, S.M,, fined a married Annie Thome, £lo with costs, upon two charges of sly-grog selling, Mr Kettle commented upon the fact that the informers in Thome's case wero not in tho pay of tho polico, Ho said that no doubt it was vory difficult for tho polico to prove sly grog soiling, That had beon recognised over since tho passing of tho Act. People would not come forward. Thoroforo, when satisfactory proof wbb forthcoming and when a deliberate solo was proved, ho thought tho Court should always imposo a substantial penalty. It was only by so doing sly grog soiling could be put down. Small fines wore absolutely ineffective Had defendant boen a man ho would have ordered imprisonment.
