A correspondent of the Christchurch Press writes on a point in spelling which came up for discussion generally before the war: should we spell it “moral” or “morale”? Everyone knows, 'of course, what the dogmatic professor seems to have pointed but. that “moral” (French) means state of discipline or spirit in armies, and that “morale” means morality, ethics, etc. And it is not unnatural that when one means (or meant, for the word can now be done without) “moral”’ and wrote “ morale,” a protest should be made. But there is something to be said for the accused, and Mr Logan Pearsall Smith, the talented guide to Donne and Professor Santayana, says it in one of the “Tracts”/ issued by the Society for Pure English. The Spectator says he has made out a “complete case” for the use of “morale.” This is what he says:. “The English ‘morale’ is not a ‘perversion of the French word. We have never had anything to do with the French word ‘morale’ : (ethics, morality, a moral, etc.), but we found the French word ‘moral’ (state of discipline and spirit in armies, etc.), suited to our needs, and put an ■ ‘e’ on to it to keep its sound distinct from that of our own word ‘moral,’ just as we have done with the French ‘local’ (English ‘locale’).” BETTER JUNKETJIT’S FLAVOUREDI When you “don’t know what to make” for dessert, try junket made with BETTLE’S JUNKO CRYSTALS.
