CONFERENCE EE AGRICULTURE. IMPORTANT RECOMMENDATIONS. MR A. Q. BANNER TO BE DIRECTOR. The following report by Air Pirani will be considered by the Wanganui Education Board at its meeting next week. Mr Pirani says; A conference of those concerned in the administration in the Wanganui Education district was held at the Board’s office on Thursday, July 22nd. Present: Messrs Fred Pirani (chairman), Senior Inspector Stuckey, Inspectors Crawford apt! Adams, Instructors J. Grant and O. A. Banner, Air W. Swanger. Director of Technical Education, and Messrs Alf. Fraser and W. A. Collins, members of the Board. There was considerable discussion on the position of the elementary agricultural work and school gardens, and it was decided to ask Messrs Stuckey .and Banner to prepare a leaflet dealing with agricultural instruction for circulation amongst teachers. The chairman painted out that Mr J. Grant was joining the staff of the Technical College at the end of the year, and it was proposed to appoint Air Banner Director Af Agriculture for the district, with, if possible, three assistants. Mr Cork, of the Technical' College, would be available for the work at the end of the year, and it was suggested that Mr Lange, of the Taonui School, Air Cork, and Mr AlcNab, at present at the Training College, he appointed. i would, therefore, recommend the Education Board : 1. To authorise the issue of the Agricultural leaflet to teachers. . 2. —To appoint Air O. A. Banner, Director of Agriculture at a salary of .£SOO a year, from Ist October, 1920. 3. —To appoint Mr Lange Assistant Instructor at £350 a year, from Ist October, 1920. 4. To appoint Mr Cork Assistant Instructor at £225 a year, from Ist of February, 1921. 5. To' appoint Mr McNab as Third Instructor from Ist of' February, 1921, at £225 a year. .. 6.—To convene a conference of agricultural instructors, inspectors and organising teachers towards the end of the year to consider the whole question and the best methods of carrying out the work. The chairman expressed his regret that Mr J. Grant was retiring from the'position of Agricultural Instructor, pointing out that he was the first instructor in elementary agriculture in New Zealand, and had fought through failure, discouragement, and difficulties to the success at present attained.
