SCHOOLS COMMITTEE

MONTHLY MEETING, The monthly meeting of the Wanganui Schools Committee was held last evening. The members present were Messrs W. Bruce (chairman), Simpson, Haase, Hawtree, Hanton, Bassett, Bell (secretary), and Mrs McKenzie. QUEEN’S, PARK—The average attendance was 279, and the/ roll number 302. It was suggested that a memorial tablet be placed in the new school to the memory of about 30 pupils killed in action.—The chairman reported that a subsidy had'been received for this memorial. Speaking of memorials generally, he stated that probably 100 pupils had been killed in action who had attended the Avenue School. He suggested that a suitable memorial should he erected at the Avenue School, and no douoc the former pupils would be glad to contnoute towards the cost, and there would be no difficulty in raising a few hundred pounds. He considered they should have one good memorial at the Avenue, with the figure of a soldier. Smaller memorials could also be erected at the other schools. He considered also that the local authorities should have moved long ago in regard to a memorial for Wanganui soldiers.—lt was decided that the Grounds Committee of the Avenue and Queen’s Park Schools report on the matter of memorials to next meeting. KEiTH STREET’ INFANTS’.—The attendance for the past six weeks had been badly affected owing to mumps, there being about 60 pupils absent daily. Last week the average was 240, and the roll number 278. VICTORIA AVENUE.—The attendance had fluctuated owing to influenza and mumps, and last week was 490 out of a roll number of 54,3.—1t was decided to instruct the hea-dra aster of the Avenue School to adopt the system of toothbrush drill now being carried ont at Keith Street, and that the pupils be asked to supply their own brushes. UNITED BAZAAR.—Some of the schools not favouring the proposals to hold a united bazaar, it was decided not to pursue the matter further.
