DISLOYALISTS.

MR HUGHES’ DENUNCIATION THE LAW MUST NOT BE DEFIED. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. Received Julv 26, 10.30 a.m. MELBOURNE, July 24. Mr Hushes fiercely , denounced the recent American utterances of Archbishop Mannix at Bendigo on Saturday, incidentally mentioning that the Gov eminent was appointing a High Commissioner in America to reflect Austra lian sentiment. MELBOURNE, July 26. Mr Hughes, in his' Bendigo speech, said; “When we put a man aboard ship by virtue of the law steamship companies and wharf labourers and seamen shall obey that law. If not we shall see what we shall see. Neither will be allowed to defy the law of the land.” Denouncing disloyalists, he declared he would “smite them hip and thigh.” Referring to Archbishop Mannix, he said he wanted American people to know that Archbishop Mannix did not represent Australia. If he said his utterances were supported by the people of Australia he said what was not true. He added: “Archbishop Ma,n-nis’s-speeches in America stamped him as a man who had gone out in the guise of an archbishop to foment war between England and America, —a man whose mission is political in its essence. Mannx was a declared Sinn Feiner, and was using his high position in the Church for the purposes of political agitation. We wanted America to understand that Australia was part and parcel of the British Empire, and whose hand is against the Empire is against us. We wanted to he friendly, and do business with America, realising that her destiny and ours coincide in the Pacific, and realise how important it is that the true sentiment of Australia should he represented in America.”
