TRAMWAYS, ETC.

To the Editor. Sir,—When I offered to supply and erect a Cambridge producer plant to overcome the hopeless muddle into which the supply of electrical energy has got in Wanganui, I said that it would work both of the Napier engines, and also, if needed, supply gas to operate the No. 3 engine, made by Messrs Browett and Bindley. To my surprise I find that Mr Talboys questioned tire accuracy or feasibility of this being done;'in fact, ho is reported in your columns as saying that “it could not be used with No. 3 engine.” With the technical accuracy of Mr Talboy’s statement I have mostly very little concern, but when he questions the accuracy of a public statement that I make, then I can’t fail to take notice. For the information of all concerned, including the tramways Engineer, I will say that a Cambridge producer plant is at present operating a big Browett-Lindley engine at the Te Kuiti electric lighting station; that the new plant for Oamaru lighting station comprises Browett-Lindley engines and 250 h.p. Cambridge producer, the plant now being ready for installation. The Tomoana freezing works use a Cambridge as a suction pressure plant in conjunction with a pressure coke plant and gas-hold-er. It has also given excellent results with Anderson high-speed multiple-cy-linder engines at Frankt-on and Ngaruawahai. from this wealth of testimony it will be seen that the suggestion that Cambridge plants cannot work satisfactorily With Browett-Lindley or other multi-cylinder engines cannot be supported on practical grounds.—l am, etc., D. J. REARDON.
