THE YACHT RACE

FOURTH TEST WON BY RESOLUTE. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. (.Extraordinary.) Received July 24, 9.35 a.m. NEW YORK, July 23. Resolute Avon tho fourth race. BOTH GOOD SAILERS. Received July 24, 9.35 a.m. NEW YORK, July 22. Yachting experts have pointed out that Shamrock, Avhich was expected to bo a good sailer in heavy wind and Resolute the better boat in a light wind, both demonstrated their ability to sail in both kinds of weather. Shamrock sailed to Adctory in the second race in tha lightest of breezes, while Resolute wou in a twelve-knot breeze, shewing remarkable speed, despite Shamrock’s greater spread of canvas. “A GOOD FIGHT.” STATEMENT BY SIR T. LIPTON. NEW YORK, July 22. Sir Thomas Upton, in a statement, said: Resolute’s victory means that w© have a good fight on our hands, which is just what I Avant. Three straight victories was something which never appealed to me. BY “VICTOR.” The cables to hand at the time of writing are very conflicting, and it is impossible to say whether Resolute has won three races—Avhich would mean retaining the Cup— or whether the boats have won two races each, Avith tho necessity of another race being sailed to decide the matter. There is no question as to the result of the first heat, which was won by Shamrock, as the American boat did not finish. The second heat was declared off owing to the time allowance being exceeded, Avhile the third heat, according to the earlier cables, ended in a win for Shamrock. Then we Avert-, told that Resolute was a Awarded that race, after remeasuremeut, on time allowance. Resolute also won the third race, and has eoat won the fourth, but the report of the interview Avith Sir Thomas Lipton, published today, makes it look as if, after all, Shamrock might have won the second race, though it was distinctly stated in some of the cables that Resolute finally got the verdict in that heat. Still, as was pointed out iu these columns at the time, there was some mistake in the cabling of the figures in connection with the race. The official announcement made immediately after tho race stated that Shamrock Avon with 2irin 26sec in hand. This was on a time allowance, according "to the latest cables, of 6min 40eecs, tho igh possibly this may have been decreased on re-measurement with another suit of sails. The increase of the time stated by 21sec still leaves Shamrock Avith 2min. Isec. in hand on the official figures as cabled. Further, the finishing times, as cabled, show that Shamrock crossed the line lOmin. ssec. ahead of her rival From this the 38 seconds which Shamrock crossed the line ahead of Resolute and the time- allowance must be deducted, Avhich Avould give Shamrock a win by 2min 26sec. These figures do not tally with the official record of the win, so that it is impossible to locate where tho error arose, and until further information comes to hand it is not known Avhether the fifth race will be necessary or not.
