It is the most serious since 1907. At least eight, were killed and seventy sent to hospital, though the death roll and casualty list is still incomplete. Disorders continually break out in the new quarters. Several priests pluckily invaded the danger zones and implored the rioters to go home,. This, however, had no effect. When the police were badly stoned they made baton charges, but finally soldiers, wearing steel iielmets in an armoured car with a Lewis gun, called out after repeated warnings, fired over the heads of the crowd, and the mob fled, but returned to the attack when they found no one was hurt. The warnings were renewed and soldiers then fired into the crowd. Protestant and Catholic shops suffered equally in the looting, which was a serious part of the rioting. Young hooligans swaggered about with.whisky bottles id their pockets, and girls were flaunting the finery from the looted shops. The streets were also littered with broken goods. Between two and three hundred were wounded by the military’s firing and the Sinn Fein sniping, Dunning, an ex-soldier, while going to bring Ins child home, had his head paxtialy blown away by a Sinn Fein sniper. A man' who helped to carry the body to a house was afterwards shot dead. During the soldiers’ firing upon Sinn Fein snipers, some shots entered a twostorey Clonard moiiastry and killed a Redemptorist priest. The fire brigade had to deal With fourteen fires during the night.
