LOCAL AND GENERAL

A Sydney cable states that the new Commonwealth steamer Emita has been launched. The wisdom of discharging the Calm at Castled iff at the beginning of this week has been well demonstrated by subsequent happenings. There was yesterday several ships in .port waiting discharge, the big shed having been filled up by the large cargoes brought by the Breeze, Storm, and the John. A certain amount of delay has been occasioned, but had the Calm discharged at the town wharf this delay would have been greatly accentuated. The Calm was given quick despatch, and we understand that the company is pleased at the rapid discharge made. We have also been in formed that no vessel will 100 allowed to discharge cargo at Castled iff while there is space available in sheds at the town wharf.
