POULTRY SHOW.

IN WANGANUI DRILL HALL,. After having been allowed to lapse for a number of years, several local poultry enthusiasts got together and decided to hold a -show in Wanganui. Their efforts culminated in the display of birds at the Drill Hall yesterday, which may be considered very creditanle for the inaugural attempt of practically a new society. The poultry entries aggregated over 300, and there was also a good display of cage birds and pigeons The local entries exceeded expectations, and these were reinforced by pens from several well-known breeds along the coast, birds being sent from Petone, Matton, Hastings, Napier, Palmerston, Hawera, and New Plymouth. The Show is well worth the patronage of local enthusiasts, and will serve a useful purpose in advancing the industry locally. The members of the Society deserve commendation on their plucky attempt to run a show at a time when breeders are at their wit’s end to obtain supplies of feed. However, there is every probability of more grain being sown next year, with the assurance of a good market for eggs for some time to come. There is no reason why the industry should not flourish in Wanganui. The arranging of the schedule left nothing to be de. sired, and the same applies to the general arrangements of staging the birds. A feature of the show was the utility classes, when in most of the pens there was very keen competition. The competition was not so keen in the fancy classes, but on the other hand, a large variety of birds were penned. The entries in ducks were somewhat limited. The pigeons, (children's pets, and. canaries, formed an important adjunct of the Show. Mr T. B. Holdaway carried off the N.I. Championship for the White Wyandotte hen, and a similar championship was awarded Mr P. W. Hawkins, of Waitara, for campine cock, and Mr T. Crosby for a Plymouth Rock white cockerel. The trophy for the best fancy pigeon went to Mr L. Adamson and for the best pigeon in the show to Mr W. Slater. The Show will be open this evening.
