FARMERS’ UNION.

MEETING OF EXECUTIVE

A meeting of the Wanganui subprovincial branch of the N.Z. Farmers’ Union was held this morning, the president, Mr C. Smith, presiding over a good attendance of delegates. BRANDING AND DIPPING. Mr Munro, of the local office of the Stock Department, was present, and explained the Act with reference to branding of sheep and cattle and also dipping sheep. These matters were fully discussed from all points of view with Mr Munro. Proposals by Maxwelltown and Waverley to alter the dipping season were remitted back to branches for further consideration. FIRE INSURANCE. A proposal to establish a branch of a Farmers’ Mutual Fire Insurance locally was supported by the branches and adopted. SUBSCRIPTIONS. Most branches supported a remit' to place the subscriptions on a sliding scale from £1 to £5, The opinion, however, was expressed that the scale should be defined by the executive, so the remit was thrown out. GOODS AT FLAG STATIONS. All branches were in favour of a remit asking the Railway Department to advise consignees of the arrival of goods at flag stations.; The remit was adopted. TELEPHONE. Branches were unanimous in advocating extensions of the telephone system in Waverley and surrounding districts. This remit was adopted.; NEW REMITS. , Commandeer. —Remits were received from Fordell, Kai Iwi, Westmere branches, demanding free markets for produce. The President remarked that all these were beside the point as the commandeers were to cease. It was decided to circulate the Westmere remit to branches: “That this meeting urges that now war conditions have ceased to exist, that where desired. New Zealand farmers have a free market for their produce.” The other remits were withdrawn. Cattle Tick.—Kai Iwi forwarded a remit "that the Government should build dips and yards for spraying cattle, and that the Government take drastic measures to fight cattle tick.” . Maldrikiri forwarded a similar remit, to the effect that all. cattle affected with the tick should be dipped, and the Government bear the expense. It was decided to remit the Kai Iwi remit to branches. Butter Bonus.—“ That the SubProvincial Executive ascertain from the Government if the producers supplying proprietary dairy concerns have benefitted by the bonuses paid out of the Consolidated Fund.” This remit, from the Maxwelltown branch, was referred to the branches.
