SWIMMING.

By NATATOR.

Mr A. Muller is meeting with a good deal of success in collecting funds for the p'irpose of sending a representative team to Auckland. At the same time much will be required, and it is hoped that the public will respond generously. The carnival, which takes place on Wednesday, February 4th, is exciting great interest among swimmers, and big fields are expected in all events, which include schools and senior championships. Says the Christchurch Sun: "A 440 yards trial race, for the purpose of selecting a boy to represent Canterbury in that event in the. schools’ division of the New Zealand championships, was held at the Sydenham Baths on Thursday, the competitors being A. Breward, A. Dalton and L. Pierr. Contrary to the general expectation, the event was won by Pierr by a narrow margin from Breward, who just beat Dalton. The race was even throughout, the leader never having more than a yard advantage. The times were; Pierr 7min. 38 sec., Breward 7min. 41sec., Dalton 7min. 41 3-ssec., all hopelessly slow from the viewpoint of a possible success for Canterbury at the New Zealand championship meeting. The standard time is 7 min., and the record, established by N. Batchelor last year, 6iniu. 30 l-ssec. At the same time, however, the swim is a good one for schoolboys, and if it should occur that a poor field should face the starter in Auckland (though it is scarcely likely), the selected boy should be heard of.”

At the Hamilton Swimming Carnival, the ICO yards intermediate South Auckland Championship was won by B. W'hineray, of Hamilton High School.
