Polls for the election of Licensing Committees are to bd hold throughout New Zealand next March.

A message has been received by the Prime Minister from the High Commissioner to the effect that the immediate cause of Lord Plunket’s death was haeinorrahage of the stomach. One of the largest land transactions recorded in the Waikato has just been completed, when 1400 acres at Te Kawa were sold by Mr J. B. Teesdale to Messrs F. Quinn and J. O’Sullivan. The purchase price was in the vicinity of £70,000. The Governor-General has despatched the following cable to Lady Plunket: The Government and people of New Zealand join with Lady Liverpool and myself in expressing our great grief at the death of Lord Plunket, a former Governor of this Dominion, and our deepest sympathy with you and your family iu your sorrow. One of the latest additions to the cost of travelling is an increase in the price of refreshments at the railway restaurant rooms. The price of meals has been advanced from two shillings to half-a-crowu, while Die long-familiar sixpenny “tea and sandwich” now costs oightpeiice. Many travellers also are complaining that ham has given way to corned beef in the composition of the sandwiches.

Since the last rise in the price of tobacco took place many men have been threatening to cease smoking as a protest, but it has been loft to the Auck land watorside workers to formally ban tobacco. Several hundred of the_ men who were sheltering from the rain in their waiting shed on Saturday unanimously passed a resolution pledging themselves to refrain from smoking, and to urge others to do the same, until a substantial reduction was made in the price of tobacco.
