RAILWAY INQUIRY BOARD.

FURTHER SITTING

THE MEN’S DEMANDS,

(Ter United Press Association.)

WELLINGTON, January 27. The Railway Servants’ Inquiry Board resumed proceedings. Mr R. Hampton, representing the second division, criticised the promotion methods, which, he contended, prevented one specialising in any branch of the service. He asked on behalf of the A.S.R.S. that the classification surface men be altered to make a greater difference between a ganger and the men under him, that gangmon’s wages be increased by three shillings per day and tradesmen’s (fitters excepted) similarly; that a married man’s pay be equal to the minimum adult wage; that a casual labourer be remunerated at the same rate as on the wharf; that female attendants get, a minimum of £2 10s per week, and be asked that the grading system be dropped as in England. At the railway inquiry, Mr Hampton asked for the payment of overtime on the basis of an 8-hour day and a 44hour week, with double time for Sunday, time and a half for special work, slips, and breakdowns, also an equitable allotment of meal hours, travelling time, pay wet and dry for ways and workmen, no differentiation between divisions in the matter of passes, leave and lodging allowances, sick and accident pay.
