ALLIANCES.
To the Editor. Sir,—l know that it is contrary to journalistic etiquette to allow reference to oorraspondenco which, has appeared in another paper. But in the present circumstances I trust you will grant mo a little indulgence. If I cannot get this into your paper before Monday it will bo of no use at all, and I undertake ordy to deal with my supposed allianoe with Mr G. Durham. I was present at Mr Veitch's mooting 1 on Thursday night, and greatly enjoyed his statesmanlike statement of his programme,. At the close of his address a vote of thanks was proposed and seconded, wpon which up jumps a man in the audiew» whom I did not know from a bar of Gilberd's best. When he announced himself as an ex-member of some Parliament or other I dropped to it that he was the Ihirham of the Liquor Trade. But what was that to mo? Am I necessarily in alliance with everybody who admires Mr Veitc-h? If so I must have a wide connection, for pretty well everybody does that. But there are thousands, Sir, who are going to voto for Mr Yeitoh on Wednesday week whom I know not, who know nothing about me, and whom I should not care to be allied with in any closer way than in treating- our political ballot-paper in the same safe way. I am voting for Mr Veitch for two reasons. First, he is a journeyman Parliamentarian, in the very prime of his usefulness, while neither of his opponents is as yet even an apprentice. And, second, because his politics suit me better than those of any other man whom I have ever seen or read of.—l am, etc., J. AITKEN.
