WAITOTARA COUNTY COUNCIL.

MONTHLY MEETING,

Tfye usual monthly meeting of the Waitotara County Council was held this morning, the chairman, Cr. W. Morrison, presiding. There was a full attendance of councillors. BY-LAWS.—A committee was set up to deal with the matter of by-laws. GRANTS. The' District Engineer wrote forwarding a. list of grants appearing on the appropriations, and asking tho Council to mark tho list in order of urgency. Four votes were listed, and it was decided to fix these in the following orderßangitatan East, ~£l for £l, balance available <£1000; Mangaiti Stream bridge, Raoritia, .£1 for £l, £600; Wanganui River Road, right bank, metalling, £1 for .£l, £260; Wanganui River Road, right bank, Ahuatu to Kaurapaoa, bridle track, £1 for £l, £250.

LOAN.—The Council waa informed that the State Advances Board had resolved to entertain the application of the Council for a loan of .£6OOO for the purpose of road and "bridge works in all ridings of the county. It was decided to take a poll on the proposal as soon as possible. WAITOI STREET.—It was decided to take dedication of the balance of this road, provided that the owners paid the Council the estimated coat of banking. ENGINEER'S REPORT. The County Engineer, Mr T. Dix, in tihe course of his report, drew attention to the urgency of reinstalling several roads. Dealing -with the work in several ridings, "the engineer stated: Brunswick—A fair amount of patching with the best materials available had been carried out, but great difficulty has been experienced in keeping the roads from breaking up. A start tad been made with the metalling of portion of the deviation»on the Tokoinaru East Road. Fifty-eight chains of engineering survey has been completed on the Missing Link Road. The Mairgaiti bridge site, which has been approved by the resident engineer, is not within the road reserve, and a survey is required to legalise the land taken for the new bridge site.

Westmcre.—Work in this riding 1 was proceeding steadily, and attendance bad been paid to the maintenance of roads, throughout the riding . Waitotara. —The roads generally were in fair order. Plans had been prepared for a reinforced concrete bridge at the Okelnt stream on thi Handley Bead. It was proposed to erect a girder structure having a clear span of 60ft, the abutments being on the cantilever principle. Several culverts were required on the main road between Kai Iwi and Maxwell town. A sharp point near the top of the hill on the Pukerimu Bead might be greatly improved by reforming about four chains of road.

Tokamaru. —The roads throughout this riding are in a good state of repair. Good progress was being made for metalling, Tokomaru West Eoad. The widening and improving of 80 chains of bridle track on the Watershed Road has been satisfactorily completed, and a further length of 100 chains had been let. The wqrk of widening, culverting, and regrading 100 chains of the Watershed Eoad, north of Messrs Chapman and Son’s homestead, has been satisfactorily completed.
