W.C.T.U.

The Wanganui East branch of the W.C.T.U. held a. very successful "payup” social on the evening of the 15th November, when there was a good attendance of members and friends. Mrs Duxlield (president of the branch) presided. The varied programme was much appreciated. Songs were rendered by Mrs J. Wight, Messrs Dux field, Yeys, and F. Marshall; piano solos by Misses Grace MacKintosh and Doris Dowsett; recitations by Mr F. Marshall; and several choruses were sung by Union members. The usual votes to the performers and to all who were responsible for the gathering brought' a pleasant evening to a close. ANNUAL MEETING. On Friday, 28th ult., the annual meeting of the Union was held, Mrs Duxfiek) presiding. , v After the minutes of the previous meeting had been confirmed, a vote, of Sympathy was passed yith Mr ’ Laws and his family in their great bereavement. Many of the members expressed their deep regret at the passing of one of their number whom they had known since childhood. Correspondence was _ received and several accounts passed for payment. Tire annual reports of the Secretary, treasurer, Whits Ribbon agent, and cradle roll superintendent were adopted. Ten shillings were voted towards an attendance prize for L.T.L. work, J&4 to Mrs Don’s fund, £2 10s to tire organising fund, together with £2 5s received from the L.T.L., and £1 was donated to the Maori work. The following officers for 1920 were elected; —President, Mrs Duxfield; vicepresidents, Mesdames Blair and McLeod; recording secretary, Mrs Dowsett; corresponding secretary and treasurer, Mrs Andrew; superintendents of departments—White Eibbon agent, Mrs Me l vin; cradle roll, Mrs Ellis; Maori work, Mrs Patterson; * Press- and narcotics, Mrs Duxfield; good citizenship and notable days, Mrs H. G. Horsley; legal and literature, Mr F. Marshall. Notice of motion rvas given to alter the meeting to the third Thursday in the month. The next meeting will he bn Friday, 6th February. Special' votes of thanks were passed to the two local papers for full and free reports of meetings and to the Anglican Church for the use of the Schoolroom. ' l
