Commenting on Patterson’s defeat, of Brookes, critics refer to lus paralysing pace; his unbridled hitting by a succession of'smashing strokes, the compelling force of which completely smothered opposition with. the exception of the second set, when Brookes showed a glimpse of his 1014 form, and proved himself a supreme genius for tactical ingenuity and all that makes for artistry in tennis.
