ITALIAN SITUATION.

ABDICATION OF KING POSSIBLE. Australian and N.Z- Cable Association. LONDON, December 1. The Daily Chronicle says that there are imminent rumours of the abdication of the King of Italy. Such rumours have often been current since Caporetto. It is true that the King’s popularity is not greater pre-war, despite his democratic tendencies and surrender of Crown lands and palaces, but there are no signs of an imminent overturning of the monarchy. The King has often said that he is willing to abdicate if it-will promote the people’s well-being. Nitti is a strong and courageous statesman, and is likely to weather the storm, but there is no real danger of Bolshevism. While a great proportion of the men will go home and discipline will collapse, Socialist newspapers demand the mobilisation of three million peasants and workers who voted for the Socialists and to tell the hot-heads that they should reflect where they are going. PROJECTED ATTACK ON MONTENEGRO. LONDON, December 1. In the House of Commons, Mr Dudley Ward announced that it is unofficially reported that D'Annunzio is preparing an expedition to attack Montenegro. THE DISTURBING D’ANNUNZIO. ROME, November 30. The country awaits the opening of Parliament oh the Ist of December with intense interest. D’Annunzio’s friends are making preparations in various cities. The Government’s dilemma is most serious. The army and navy will not fight against the Italians who are claiming to defend the rights of Italy. Attempts to use them will mean that the officers will go over to D’Annunzio.
